二戰結束後，全球有50多處法庭展開對日審判，在美國主導且國際法未臻成熟的情況下，留下大片空白與爭議。尤其是東京大審，有人質疑：這是一場為了滿足復仇而動用虛假的法律程序。戰後美國選擇不追究天皇的責任，更在冷戰期間將日本視為地緣政治下的盟友，對戰犯問題採取寬容態度。到了1970年代日本經濟崛起，他們開始重新定義戰爭罪行，並抗議同盟國在戰後所推行的正義，甚至透過重寫歷史，試圖翻轉國際形象。有些開始將二戰「正名」為「大東亞戰爭」，詮釋成一種解放亞洲之戰，或是將日本對中國與對歐美的戰爭理由分開，後者是為了防禦而戰，並非一種侵略行為。
