Helmets like this were used across Europe from the 9th century onwards. They remained in use at least until shortly after 1066, as they are depicted around this time on both Norman and Anglo Saxon warriors in the famous Bayeux Tapestry. Helmets of this type were used by Vikings as well as other Germanic people. Eventually, the well known nasal helmet evolved from this type of spangenhelm. Unlike later nasal
